As many as 40% of rural South African mothers are HIV-positive. Umdoni, a remote region in southern KwaZulu Natal, is comprised largely of traditional homesteads scattered among steep hillsides and inaccessible dirt roads. With a 66% unemployment rate, few mothers have the money to travel the long distances to get to AIDS Treatment Sites to receive medical care.
Today, the situation is much improved for 100 HIV-positive mothers living in Umdoni, who are enrolled in the "Road to Recovery" Transport programme sponsored by the PositiveMoms Foundation.
The PositiveMoms Foundation has partnered with the G.J. Crookes Hospital to help provide HIV-positive mothers with monthly transport vouchers so that they can attend the hospital's AIDS treatment programme and benefit from life-saving anti-retroviral treatment. Mothers are closely monitored to ensure that they respond well to treatment, remain healthy and are able to care for their children. They are counseled on the importance of adhering to their ARV medication and the transport vouchers ensure that mothers can travel to the hospital regularly without interrupting their treatment.
With more than 4,000 mothers needing treatment in Umdoni alone, the PositiveMoms Foundation hopes to sponsor many more mothers. For just R100/month or R1,200/year, you can sponsor a mother and pay for her roundtrip travel expenses to obtain her medications and spare thousands of young children from the premature death of a loving parent.
